Older homes, older systems
A lot of the housing stock dates back decades. Same as any older neighborhood, budget for an honest look at the roof, foundation, and wiring before you fall in love with the character.
Chico Neighborhoods
A working-class, close-in neighborhood with real history behind it. Here's what it's actually like to live there.
What It's Like
Barber sits south of Little Chico Creek and west of Park Avenue, close enough to downtown that you can get there fast. It started as a company settlement built to house workers at the old Diamond Match Factory and was later absorbed into the city. It's a genuinely working-class neighborhood, with a handful of historic homes and buildings still standing from that era, including a few that are locally recognized for their history.
It's quieter and more affordable than a lot of Chico's close-in neighborhoods, without the student-rental churn you get near campus. There's an active neighborhood association that looks out for the area, which tells you something about how residents feel about the place.

Good to Know
A lot of the housing stock dates back decades. Same as any older neighborhood, budget for an honest look at the roof, foundation, and wiring before you fall in love with the character.
The old Diamond Match property just north of the neighborhood is slated for a future development called Barber Yard. Worth knowing about if you're thinking long-term.
You're close to downtown without downtown prices. If budget matters as much as location, this is one of the better trade-offs in Chico.
